Surgery Consultations in the Digital Age

Monday, May 11th, 2009

At Plastic Surgery Seattle, we try our best to educate and comfort patients during surgery consultations. One way that can be achieved is through email correspondence. Prior to a consultation in person, you can contact us with questions and concerns you may have.

These type of services are becoming very popular as internet-savvy patients look towards the web to research surgery procedures. Last week, CNN reported that some surgeons have gone as far as implementing a “virtual consultation” using live chat services like Skype or iChat. These platforms are known for being user-friendly. One East coast surgeon claims that roughly 15 percent of his patients opt for the virtual consult.

Surgery practices in foreign countries are also capitalizing on new technology, which allows them to reach a wider clientele. For patients, it’s a great way to gather information or determine if they are comfortable with a surgeon. Michael Boeckle, who helps schedule surgery “vacation packages” for patients, says “patients usually do not pick their doctor by price, but by how comfortable they feel with the information they have received.”

If you decide to contact us, we can ensure your privacy. We’ll also do our best to address your questions in a timely manner.

Cleveland Surgeons and Medical Professionals Perform Revolutionary Face Transplant

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

A highly diverse group of medical professionals led by Cleveland Clinic’s Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute have completed the first-ever “80 percent facial transplant” on a female patient that suffered severe facial trauma.

While personal information about the patient has been withheld for privacy reasons, the press release states that the 22 hour procedure was the “largest and most complex face transplant in the world.” Many critical components of the face were restored.  Surgeons precisely integrated facial structures like the lower eyelids and nose, while also replacing different complex tissues like skin, nerves and arteries.

Director of Plastic surgery research and team leader Maria Siemionow has spent a significant part of her career researching and developing such a procedure.  She was able to lead a group of professionals from a variety of areas, including psychology, anesthesia, opthamology, dentistry and others. A cooperative approach of this magnitude is the only way to succeed in such a complex surgical procedure.

Dr. Siemionow has a profound connection between her work and her motivation to help injured patients. “No other aspect of our anatomy is capable of even a fraction of the complexity of motion and emotion allowed by the muscles and tissues of the face” says Siemionow.

Plastic Surgery Seattle – Patient Satisfaction

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Dr. Gottlieb, known for achieving soft, natural results, provides breast augmentation candidates choices when it comes to implant incision placement. “Most patients have some concern about visible scarring,” he explains. “What many women don’t realize is that they have options regarding the incision site, including surgical insertion beneath the breast folds or through the navel, where the incision is virtually undetectable.” Working with the patient to devise a plan she feels comfortable with is Dr. Gottlieb’s ultimate goal. “The final word on implant placement is always patient preference,” he says. “When the patient is a part of the process, it makes for a more precise surgical plan, which is the key to achieving greater patient satisfaction.”  “Helping people feel good about themselves is the driving force behind Plastic Surgery Seattle.”

—Dr. Jourdan R. Gottlieb

In practice since 1985, Dr. Gottlieb is fervent in his belief that plastic surgery can improve one’s self-esteem and confidence.  “It’s inspiring when patients tell me how my staff and I helped renew in them a greater sense of self,” says Dr. Gottlieb. “The gratitude expressed by someone when they love their results makes my job rewarding.” Dr. Gottlieb appreciates the trust his patients instill in him and feels it is his responsibility to realize their visions by partnering and working with them to ensure expectations aremet. “When someone selects your practice and then refers you to friends and family, you can feel confident that you’ve helped them achieve their goals.”

seattle plastic surgeonRenowned for his expertise and skill as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Jourdan Gottlieb is considered to be one of the best and brightest surgeons in the Puget Sound area. With years of experience and a dedicated staff who believes in his mission of safety, comfort and personal service, Dr. Gottlieb has created a successful and growing practice in Plastic Surgery Seattle.

Gottlieb appreciates the trust his patients instill in him and feels it is his responsibility to realize their visions by partnering and working with them to ensure expectations are met. “When someone selects your practice and then refers you to friends and family, you can feel confident that you’ve helped them achieve their goals.”

With breast augmentation as one of his most-requested procedures, Dr. Gottlieb employs a host of rejuvenating techniques to help his patients achieve proportioned, fuller breasts that exude youth with enhanced firmness. One such technique, known as transumbilical breast augmentation, enables Dr. Gottlieb to enhance breast size through a hidden incision in the belly button, with no visible scars on the breast or in the armpits. “Many patients are now opting for endoscopic breast implantation, as it produces natural-looking results, takes about an hour to perform and yields relatively quick recoveries. I have been performing this procedure for about three years and am continually impressed with the benefits this technique offers.” As with all procedures performed, Dr. Gottlieb customizes his breast augmentations to meet the individual needs of his patients. “By modifying my techniques, I am better able to serve my diverse clientele and offer them results that are in accordance with their likes, dislikes and aesthetic ideals,” he says.

Smoking and surgery a bad combo

Monday, August 18th, 2008

We all know smoking is bad for the heart and lungs. But did you know it can also cause healing problems after plastic surgery? Procedures that require skin to be shifted — such as tummy tucks or breast lifts — are especially prone to problems when performed on people who smoke. Nowadays, many plastic surgeons refuse to perform them on smokers.

“Nicotine causes the tiny blood vessels in the skin to clamp down or constrict, which reduces blood supply to the skin,” said Dr. Darshan Shah, a plastic surgeon in Bakersfield, California. Without adequate blood supply, the incisions can heal poorly, are prone to infection, bruise more and may form raised, red scars.

If you are interested in having Dr. Gottlieb perform your surgery, he will discuss your cigarette smoking and other medical history information during the consultation. For information on how to quit, visit smokefree.gov.

Study says breast reduction surgery lifts self-esteem

Monday, August 11th, 2008

breast reductionIf your large breasts are weighing you down (physically and emotionally), you may want to consider breast reduction surgery. According to a study that recently appeared in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, large-breasted women who have breast reduction surgery later report less back pain and greater self-esteem. According to statistics, more than 150,000 women underwent the procedure last year.

The president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Alan Gold, commented on the study favorably. “This study further demonstrates that the connection between the aesthetic results of plastic surgery and the emotional, social and physical quality of life of our patients cannot be underestimated,” said Dr. Gold.

Women in or near Seattle who would like to reduce the size of their breasts can contact Dr. Gottlieb for a breast reduction consultation.

I want patients to feel like they’re talking to someone they feel they can be honest with Dr. Jourdan R. Gottlieb

One thing that patients appreciate about Plastic Surgery Seattle is the trim on the office walls and the carpet in the large exam rooms hide the clinical components of the plastic surgeon Seattle office. Dr. Gottlieb likens the place to a businessman’s office and chose it for its homey appeal.  Every space within my practice looks attractive, not like a place you’d go to have your heart listened to, he says. Personal attention is a central focus of the practice.  We treat all of our patients with individualized care and concern.

A Trusting Comfort
Patients meeting plastic surgeon Jourdan R. Gottlieb appreciate his professional demeanor and relaxed nature, which reflect his meticulous expert approach to medicine.

I don’t want them to feel like they’re talking to just another doctor, but rather with someone they feel they can be honest with he says. Truthfulness and understanding are what attract patients to his office, called Plastic Surgery Seattle. His practice, offering mostly body contouring, including breast augmentation, abdominoplasty and liposuction, is two-thirds cosmetic surgery and one-third general reconstructive surgery. I try to make sure that the patient understands what he or she wants and that I understand what that is and whether there is a realistic possibility of accomplishing it, Dr. Gottlieb says. We always want to make sure that their goals match what can be accomplished surgically.

BREAST SURGERY OPTIONS

Each patient who sees Dr. Gottlieb for a BREAST AUGMENTATION is given a choice of how their implants should be placed. There are different types of incisions, each with pros and cons, he explains. It’s the same operation but with different incision sites. The most popular choices are the ones that have the most MINIMAL SCARRING, such as through the NAVEL or the fold under the breast. When the doctor goes through the belly button, for instance, there is no visible incision on the torso and a minimally discernible incision on the navel. It’s nothing a boyfriend or husband will see, Dr. Gottlieb points out. This is a real advantage because it’s a very attractive alternative. The instrument used is very specialized because it has to reach a far distance to get the implant to the right place. Another inconspicuous option is through the FOLD UNDER THE BREAST, which is also not noticeable by the patient or anyone else. I believe both options have the least tampering of the breast tissue compared to other methods, he says. View some of the best Seattle Breast Augmentation photos.
