Cosmetic Ear Surgery

Cosmetic ear surgery, or otoplasty, from Plastic Surgery Seattle is recommended for men and women who are self-conscious about the size or shape of their ears and desire a more pleasing look. This procedure can be performed on children at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five or six years of age. Even if the ears are mildly protruding, the condition can lead to self-consciousness and embarrassment. Having this procedure can eliminate the stigma of "elephant ears."

During an otoplasty procedure, Dr. Gottlieb will place incisions just behind the ear and then work the cartilage into the desired shape and position. Following your surgery, Dr. Gottlieb will place head dressings over the ears to minimize swelling and discomfort. It is important to the healing process that patients wear the head dressing as long as instructed. Normal activities are usually resumed in 2 weeks and possibly sooner, pending Dr. Gottlieb's recommendation. Contact sports should be avoided for about 6 weeks.

Although serious complications with otoplasty are rare, potential risks do exist. Remember, everyone heals at their own pace. Dr. Gottlieb will describe all the potential risks of otoplasty and your personal healing expectations during your confidential ear surgery consultation.
